Myofascial dry needling
- What is it?
- MDN is the use of thin, sterile single-use needles inserted into the skin to treat myofascial pain and trigger points. Trigger points are hyper irritable spots within a taut band of muscle that can cause pain. They can develop due to poor posture, muscle overuse or injury.
- Symptoms can include;
- Localised muscle pain, with tenderness at the site
- Referred pain
- Stiffness or restricted movement
- When might a Myotherapist use it?
- If there is a particularly stubborn or reactive trigger point causing you pain or restriction within the muscle.
- If you are particularly sensitive to hands on treatment or pressure point work then MDN can actually be a gentler approach to deactivating or releasing the trigger points.
- What to expect from this modality?
- You may feel a bit sore and achy through the point where you have been needled. Applying heat and continuing to drink water throughout the rest of the day will help with this.
- Once the achiness subsides you should feel a sense of relief from the pain, more movement and mobility through the affected area.
- Benefits:
- MDN can help to decrease local muscular pain and improve function through the muscles range of motion.
- It also helps to improve blood circulation along with the potential reduction in referred pain.
